As a board-certified Fairfax / Bethesda plastic surgeon, I treat countless Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland cosmetic surgery patients. Although my patients generally range in age from 18 to 70 years old, they do not all seek the same cosmetic procedures. Our younger patients tend to have different aesthetic concerns than our older patients.

If you are wondering which cosmetic surgery procedure is most popular among specific age groups, keep reading. The following are my most-requested cosmetic surgery procedures, broken down by age group.

Teens

One of the few cosmetic procedures I perform for teens is nose surgery, or rhinoplasty. I perform nose surgery for teenagers on a case-by-case basis, and will not provide the procedure for teens whose noses are still developing or who are not making the decision to undergo nose surgery of their own accord. However, I often find that nose surgery can greatly help teens who feel self-conscious — or are being bullied due to their oversized, crooked or otherwise misshaped nose — feel more confident and comfortable in social situations.

Patients in Their 20s

Breast augmentation surgery with saline or silicone implants is a popular request among my patients who are in their 20s. By their 20s, women’s breasts have typically stopped developing, and the true size of the breasts is revealed. It is at this point in life that many women realize they are unhappy with the petite size or asymmetry of their breasts and seek surgical correction.

Individuals in Their 30s

Individuals in their 30s generally visit me with one of two main aesthetic concerns: premature signs of visible aging or the physical toll that pregnancy and breastfeeding has had on their figure.

For patients in their 30s who are frustrated with the visible signs of aging that have started to creep up throughout the face (e.g., wrinkles, uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation), I usually suggest nonsurgical cosmetic treatment options. These may include injectable BOTOX muscle relaxant to suspend muscle movement temporarily, thus smoothing out the overlying wrinkles, or dermal filler treatments such as Juvederm to restore lost volume and fill in facial lines and wrinkles. Individuals in their 30s are relatively young, so many do not yet need surgical intervention.

For women who are concerned with the physical effects that pregnancy and breastfeeding have had on their body, I usually offer mommy makeover surgery. This cosmetic procedure typically includes breast surgery to improve the size, shape or position of the breasts as well as tummy tuck surgery to remove excess abdominal skin and improve abdominal muscle tone for a flatter, firmer abdominal profile.

Adults in Their 40s

Visible signs of aging generally become more pronounced for adults in their 40s. The body produces less collagen and elastin, two proteins that are integral in maintaining healthy, supple skin. Without these proteins, the skin loses its elasticity and starts to sag. Wrinkles appear, and bags under the eyes start to develop.

For these reasons, adults in their 40s often request facial rejuvenation procedures that address specific parts of the face. I often perform eyelid lift surgery, or blepharoplasty, to remove excess skin and fat from the eye area, providing a more rejuvenated look throughout the eyes. I also often perform brow lift surgery for patients in their 40s to improve the look of forehead furrows, which can impart a perpetually worried appearance.

Patients Who Are 50-Plus Years Old

Facelift surgery is a popular procedure among patients who are over the age of 50. Undergoing surgical facelift in Bethesda or Fairfax with me is an effective way to achieve a more comprehensive aesthetic transformation than cosmetic surgery procedures that are specifically designed to treat a single facial feature. Facelift surgery can improve the look of sagging skin, displaced fat, lost muscle tone and a loss of volume throughout the entire face, including the lower facial region that includes the jaw line and neck.
