Do you feel that your buttocks appear flat and lack a round, full appearance? Do you desire a more hourglass appearance? A buttock augmentation, also known as a Brazilian butt lift, is a body contouring procedure that can shape both your buttock and waist to give you the figure you desire.

About Buttock Augmentation

Joseph Michaels, MD, FACS, is a board certified plastic surgeon in Maryland, offering buttock augmentation / Brazilian butt lift to women and men that want a shapelier and fuller buttock, both in and out of clothing. Dr. Michaels offers his patients two options for buttock augmentation: liposuction with autologous fat transfer to the buttocks and gluteal implants. Dr. Michaels’ preferred method of treatment is fat transfer to the buttocks for the following reasons: (1) the transferred fat feels more natural than an implant; and (2) Dr. Michaels can strategically transfer the fat into the specific areas of the buttock that require volume.

Many patients think that the goal of buttock augmentation is simply to make the buttock look larger through the use of either large-volume fat injections or through placement of a large buttock implant. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Buttock augmentation is truly a body sculpting procedure. Unless you are a thin patient without excess fat, Dr. Michaels will first perform liposuction to contour the areas around your buttock. This is called liposculpting.

Making the areas around your buttocks smaller, specifically your waist and thighs, will have the effect of making your buttocks appear larger. The fat that was removed by liposuction can then be used to shape and fill the buttocks, giving both a rounder appearance with increased buttock projection.

Consultation

During your consultation, Dr. Michaels will carefully examine your buttock region to determine where you may have deficiencies and/or excess areas of fat. Potential donor sites will also be evaluated to assess whether there is sufficient fat to perform autologous fat transfer. After listening to your specific concerns, Dr. Michaels will individualize a treatment plan to help you achieve your goals.

Fat Transfer

Dr. Michaels prefers the fat transfer method which uses fat from your body to augment the contour of your buttock.

Dr. Michaels will first perform liposuction from all potential donor sites. This is performed by making minuscule incisions in the skin in areas that can be covered with clothing. He will infuse tumescent fluid, which contains a local anesthetic, to assist with the removal of fat. A thin, hollow tube is then inserted through the same incision and the excess fat is removed and collected. This fat will then be prepared for transfer into the buttocks, and Dr. Michaels will target and inject this fat specifically to the areas where you have deficiencies. The results will leave you with natural, shapelier buttocks.

Buttock Implants

In patients that do not have sufficient excess fat for transfer, buttock implants are placed through small incisions placed adjacent to the tailbone to achieve the desired shape.

Both buttock augmentation techniques are performed under general anesthesia and on an outpatient basis. The surgery can last up to four or five hours depending on the type and complexity of your procedure.

Recovery

You will need to take seven to 14 days off from work or your regular schedule. During this time you will not be able to place pressure on your buttocks. You will need to sleep on your abdomen or your sides. If you need to sit, you will have to sit on the back of your thighs and not your buttocks. You will need to take frequent, short walks beginning the day of your procedure. You must also avoid heavy lifting and refrain from exercise for several weeks. A compression garment will need to be worn for four weeks.

The treated areas may be bruised, swollen, sore, tender or numb. These symptoms are common and should improve with time. You will receive pre- and post-operative instructions prior to your procedure.

It may take up to six months to realize your final result.
